Event Description
Please join us with guest music leader Miyo Aoki as she leads us through:
Italians and Other Strangers
The title of this session comes from the English composer and theorist Thomas Morley, who wrote in 1597 that “Italians and other strangers are greatlie to be commended.” Italian music in the 16th and 17th centuries was so influential abroad that some composers even took on Italian names to further their careers. The 17th-century musical amateur and theorist Roger North remarked upon this phenomenon when he described the composer John or Giovanni Coperario, “who by the way was plain Cooper but affected an Italian termination.”
We will play songs and dances from the Italian Renaissance by composers such as Bartolomeo Tromboncino and Maddalena Casulana, along with pieces written in other lands but inspired by the Italian style, including the Flemish Jacob Regnart and the Englishman Coperario, alias Cooper!
