Event Description
Montclair Early Music will celebrate Winter Solstice with a concert of Medieval and Renaissance music and will include a Mummer’s Play, St. George & the Dragon. Mummer's Plays have traditionally been included in Winter Solstice Celebrations originating in England and have spread throughout the world.
This family friendly event will feature poetry, medieval instruments, Morris Dancing, and revelry with audience participation. Mummers, dressed in colorful costumes and bells will brighten the winter season by performing songs and dances concluding with the audience joining in a circle singing “Lord of the Dance.” Children and adults are fascinated by the unique sound of the music, the instruments, and fanfare.
The program is FREE and will take place at St. James Episcopal Church, 581 Valley Road, Montclair on Saturday, December 9th at 7 PM. A preview performance will take place on December 2nd at 1 pm as part of the Montclair Arts Festival.

Montclair Early Music is a group of amateur and professional musicians, established in 2010 by Julienne Pape with the objective of raising the awareness and appreciation of Medieval and Renaissance Music.They have performed locally at community events including Glen Ridge Mayoral Reception, Montclair YMCA, Montclair Historical Society, Victorian Society, Presby Iris Gardens, A Twelfth Night Celebration in Somerville NJ, and at various area churches and most recently, “Robin Hood at the May Faire” on May 20, 2017.
